Harvesting rainwater for a special garden in Brighton

The Brighton and Hove Food partnership are using our community grant to collect rainwater

The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership used our community grant to put in a rain harvesting system, to help their gardens to flourish. The charity used the funds to install and repair an efficient rainwater harvesting system for their outdoor plot in Stamner Park. It’s an outdoor space for wellbeing activities enjoyed by local community groups and volunteers.

Using rainwater for the garden instead of relying on tap water is a great way to sustain and develop your garden, whether it’s a large community garden or a small garden at home. At home, fitting a water butt is just one way to save water in the garden and help maintain plants, particularly during the drier months.

The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership received the £8,000 community grant in July 2022 as part of a scheme by Southern Water to support local charities. The grant also helped them improve accessibility to the garden by adding wheelchair matting.

Jess Linton, Manager of The Plot said: “We have been so pleased with our new rainwater system, thank you so much! Our adolescent group and volunteers have been pleased with a collection site at the front near our herb circle and front beds. It also means we have much better rain collection in general, which we are particularly glad of in the drier months. We are a very small community group, and this contribution really benefits our growing capabilities.”
